Exploring the High Plains

Sure, we're all coming into to town for one reason: Games, games, games. (Is that three reasons? Never mind.) But the Mile High City and its scenic surroundings are brimming with life and culture. Here are a few highlighted attractions and some general reminders for all Mind Games attendees.

Mountain Travel

Denver is a spectacular city, host to world-class skiing and absolutely gorgeous mountain vistas. If you’re interested in traveling the mountains, simply take 70 West from the hotel! Rented vehicles will do just fine, and no four-wheel drive is necessary for most locations. Mountain shuttles are also available for easy and cost-effective day-tripping should you not want to rent a car. Some of the more popular destinations include:

  • Golden for Coors Brewery, easy mountain trail hikes, and great food (27 miles)
  • Georgetown for bighorn sheep viewing, train rides, and gold panning (58 miles)
  • Idaho Springs for breweries, a quaint mining town, and great barbeque (46 miles)
  • Silverthorne / Frisco for outlet shopping and the closest town to the big resorts — Breckenridge, Keystone, and more (80 miles)

If you’re interested in skiing, some resorts will still easily be open at this time, including Loveland, Arapahoe Basin, and possibly others. Discount passes can be obtained by emailing Beth Anne Demeter, or by calling (720) 320-1150.

Denver Museums

Denver has several fabulous museums, including the Botanic Gardens, Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum (with an X-Wing!), Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver Art Museum, History Colorado Center, Molly Brown House Museum, Money Museum at the Denver Mint, and the Federal Reserve Bank.

The Colorado Rockies

If you’re interested in baseball, discount tickets are available for Colorado Rockies games April 20-25! Use promo code: COWAN1.

Colorado Delicacies

Colorado has the highest concentration of local and craft breweries in the country. Also, several distilleries of whiskey, rum, and other fine beverages can be found around town. If you’re interested in searching for a few, check out Law’s Whiskey, Stranahan’s Whiskey, the Denver Distillery, Golden Moon Distillery, or Leopold’s Distillery. If you’re interested in beer, check out Breckenridge Brewery, Great Divide Brewing Company, Bull & Bush Brewery, Renegade Brewing, or the Intrepid Sojourner Beer Project … Coors Brewery even has a free tour and tastings!

Reminders for Mind Games Attendees

Glad you’re attending Mind Games! We’re excited you’re coming, but there are a few things to keep in mind when visiting Colorado.

First, the weather is very dry in Colorado, so much so that you’ll see lots of people carrying around water bottles all the time. The hotel will have water stations throughout, but keep in mind to drink often. Altitude sickness is common and drinking lots of water is the best way to prevent headaches associated with altitude problems. Our weather is generally mild and mid-April can see highs of mid-60s and lows in the mid-30s. Additionally, if you feel more effects of the altitude than just dehydration, supplemental oxygen services are sometimes a good idea.

Second, there are lots of tourism options in Denver, and we’re not just talking about the mountain vistas. If you’re interested in experimenting with cannabis, remember that less is more. With legalization came stronger dosages and more creative delivery mechanisms such as cake bites, gummi candies, oils, and so on. Several stores offer different products around town, and you’ll need a driver’s license to enter. Golden Meds is the closest store to the hotel, although Green Solution is a large chain and also recommended. Staff at all stores are friendly and open to questions and advice.

Finally, there are quite a few food options inside and outside the hotel. Meals will be provided. (The event schedule and meal options are available online.) Outside of this, a food cart with sandwiches and other snacks will be available when meals are over. The hotel has its own restaurant and food (e.g., pizza, sandwiches, carry-out options), and you can order delivery from local restaurants. Keep in mind that outside food cannot be brought into conference space, only individual guest rooms. If you’re interested in walking outside the hotel, several fast food establishments are close, including Subway, Qdoba, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, Zume Asian, Chu Asian, KFC and A&W. Across the street is a Taco Bell, Long John Silvers’, and Sonic.
